2023 Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Vanguard Award
This award is given by the The Shabazz Center to persons whose accomplishments along with their humane and unwavering commitment to truth, equity and mentoring the next generation of youth—are both invaluable and benefit our larger community.
2021
ILA Children’s & Young Adults’ Book Award
The International Literacy Association (ILA) Children's and Young Adults' Book Awards are intended for newly published authors who show unusual promise in the children's and young adults' book field. Books from all countries and published in English for the first time during the 2020 calendar year were considered. “With all of the uncertainties of the past year, these book creators are providing the constant we need: the ability to find refuge in and to grow through books,” said ILA Executive Director Marcie Craig Post.

Bank Street College Best Children’s Book of the Year
The Black Friend was recognized by Bank Street College under the Law and Justice category for diversity and outstanding merit for ages 14 and older. In evaluating books for their literary merit, the Bank Street Children’s Book Committee (CBC) recognizes the importance of diversity in children’s literature and acknowledges and celebrates the voices and cultures of all of our readers. The CBC values representations of characters who are change agents and advocates for social justice, inclusivity, and equity.

Cooperative Children’s Book Center Choices Book List
The Black Friend was recognized in CCBC Choices under the Understanding Oneself and Others category. The recommendations represent their perspective on excellence in 2020 publishing for children and teens. These books reflect many intersectional aspects of identity within and beyond race and ethnicity that offer perspectives and experiences never read before.

In the Margins Book Award
In The Margins seeks out and highlights fiction and non-fiction titles of high-interest appeal for male or female readers, ages 9-21, who may identify with BIPOC youth, youth from street culture, youth in restrictive custody, or youth who are reluctant readers. The Black Friend was recognized by In The Margins for the 2021 Young Adult Nonfiction Award.

Forbes 30 Under 30
Frederick was featured on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for marketing and advertising after creating the largest GoFundMe campaign in history, #BlackPantherChallenge, which allowed more than 73,000 children to see the black superhero movie.
2018
Comic-Con Humanitarian of the Year
Frederick was chosen for the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award, which was created to honor people in comics and the popular arts who have worked to help others. Each year’s recipients are chosen by the Comic-Con committee, which selects one recipient for its ongoing humanitarian efforts.

“The Root 100" List
Frederick was featured on The Root 100 list, which is an annual list of the most influential African Americans, ages 25 to 45. It’s their way of honoring those whose work has helped to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations.
